Christmas Markets Outside of Stockholm
If you are a bit tired of the same old Christmas Market (Julmarknad) in Gamla Stan, then you should take a day trip to visit the Christmas Market in the stone barn of Steninge Slott located near Sigtuna. Steninge Slott is an impressive estate with tall pine trees and a picturesque walking path to get you in the holiday spirit.
Warm and cozy, the barn offers a reprieve from traditional outdoor markets, and you can shed your heavy jackets, hats, and gloves while you shop at a leisurely pace.
You’ll find everything from Christmas decorations, paper stars, ornaments, and cheese slicers to Kosta Boda crystal and Georg Jensen ware.
Insider tip: The tall ceiling of the barn will make paper stars on display look smaller than they truly are by comparison. I bought a beautiful paper star that appeared to be a reasonable size in the barn only to discover that it was much too large for my oversized kitchen window when I brought it home.
Christmas Market at Steninge Slott
The Christmas Market at Steninge Slott offers a mix of traditional boutique shopping and handmade goods from local artists. There is also a restaurant on the lower level and sandwiches and sweets available for purchase in the loft.
If you’re looking to combine your Christmas shopping with a picture of your kids sitting on Santa’s lap, then this offers a modest compromise. A statue of Santa with a pillow on his lap might be a less scary way for young children to take that classic holiday photo (although, my daughter was still a bit leery of this Santa).
After you are finished shopping, buy some warm nuts from the vendor outside and take a wintery stroll toward the estate. If you’re lucky, you might catch some winter sunshine.
Open for Visitors
Unlike most Christmas markets that don’t open until late November this indoor market is open almost every day from mid-November until right before Christmas Eve.
If you want to beat the holiday crowds and get all of your shopping done early, the market is very slow at the beginning of their season. We visited Steninge Slott’s Christmas Market last year in mid-December, and there was a 20-minute queue of cars waiting to park.
This year, we visited on the opening weekend and essentially had the place to ourselves. I much prefer the slower, earlier holiday season where I can peruse the handicrafts at leisure.
