Germaine Thomas takes you through one of the largest outdoor markets in the greater Stockholm area – Ösmo Marknad.
There are many signs that tell Stockholmers summer is approaching and they include outdoor markets. One of them is Ösmo Market (Ösmo marknad) which opened this weekend, May 24-25. Less than an hour’s ride from Stockholm Central Station direct to Ösmo in Nynäshamn, this market is well worth the travel.
Started in 1990, it is the largest outdoor market in Södertörn, part of the Greater Stockholm Area. The Lions Club Sorunda-Ösmo along with Ösmo Football Club have supported the market for the last 24 years and it’s usually held the last weekend in May, come rain or shine.
I have visited this market almost every year since I’ve been in Sweden and it never disappoints me. I enjoy tasting sweet roasted almonds and fresh bread with different homemade jams and preservatives. My favorite stand which always seems to be buzzing with activity is a spice stand run by Oldenburgs Kryddor (spices). Oldenburg is a small family-run business which was started by Rolf and Rigmor in 1985.
Starting with roughly 50-60 types of spices, their small business has grown and they currently sell over 270 different types of spices and blends that they have created based on customer demand. If you enjoy cooking and experimenting with spices from all over the world, this stand is worth visiting as I personally usually purchase at least 10-12 packets from them everytime I visit.
This year, there were approximately 120 stands selling unique one of a kind items from rare books, handmade jewelry, clothing, candy, and chatskis to fresh bread, fresh roasted almonds and other tasty treats, and there usually something for everyone. There is also a mini carnival and pony rides for children with loads of fresh countryside air and sunshine for all.
