Looking for the best Christmas markets in Stockholm?
Trying to capture in words the seasonal Christmas spirit that flows through Stockholm’s veins during this time of year is challenging.
The smell of mulled wine (glögg), gingerbread cookies (pepparkakor), saffron buns (lussekatter), candied almonds roasting in large street-side woks, and various sweet smelling wafts all urging us to start relaxing and taking inventory of the current year so we can start the new year afresh with new goals and new possibilities.
Here are some of the best Christmas markets in Stockholm.
The Royal Mews (Kungliga Hovstallet)
The stables where the royal horses, harnesses, and carriages are kept usually runs a traditional Christmas fair where you can buy high quality handicrafts and delicacies while exploring its buildings and checking out the horses too.
Farmers’ Christmas Market (Bondens Egen Marknad)
Held the four Saturdays that lead up to Christmas, this is a popular farmers’ market on the island of Södermalm in the area south of Folkungagatan (SoFo). In addition to organic and locally produced goods, you’ll also find seasonal Christmas crafts and food items as well.
Stortorgets Julmarknad (Christmas Market)
I love perusing this historic Christmas market in Stockholm’s Gamla stan. Moving through wooden stalls of red timber filled with artisans and vendors selling decorations, Christmas gnomes, glass ornaments, handmade preservatives and jams, smoked meats, spices, cheeses, ginger cookies, and glögg, it’s difficult not to get into a festive mood.
Christmas Markets in the Archipelago – Fjäderholmarna, Utö, Sandhamn
The island of Fjäderholmarna held its first Christmas market in 2014. The islands of Utö and Sandhamn also have Christmas markets which you can visit to buy seasonal items such as Christmas sweets, pottery, deli meats, and crafts, enjoy Christmas drinks, explore traditional markets, sip glögg and listen to Christmas carols as well as enjoy a classic julbord (Christmas smorgasbord) on board the ferry.
Boats operated by Stromma depart from Nybroviken and Strandvägen.
Christmas Market at Skansen
A popular Christmas market in Stockholm held at the oldest open air museum in the world, Skansen. You’ll find vendors selling Christmas decorations, glass ornaments, Swedish handicrafts, handmade preservatives and jams, smoked meats, spices, artisan cheeses, gingersnap cookies called pepparkakor, and of course, glögg which is often served with raisins and blanched almonds
Hornstull Christmas Market
The eclectic neighborhood of Hornstull usually holds a Christmas market where you can find cool Christmas decorations, artwork, handicrafts, and more. In the past, the market was held in the square next to Hornstull’s marketplace but has now moved in-house into the shopping center.
Christmas Market at Drottningholm
Visit the Royal Family of Sweden’s official residential palace to explore its traditional Christmas market where you can find decorations, handmade goods, classic Christmas treats and more.
Christmas Market at Beckmans College of Design
Beckmans College of Design is one of Sweden’s premier colleges for design and art, and you can browse its unique Christmas market where students sell their crafted-work such as posters, jewelry and other seasonal accessories.
Kungsträdgården
One of Stockholm’s most popular parks, Kungsträdgården, plays home to a very cosy Christmas market where you can shop for fun Christmas gifts such as wooden handicrafts and Christmas gnomes, smoked and cured sausages, fish, and other meats, wool products like hats and mittens, and much more. You can also go skating at the nearby ice rink too.
Konstfack Christmas Market
Organized by art students of Konstfack, its Christmas market showcases creativity and art from posters and pottery to jewelry and textiles which you can buy.
Design Christmas Market at Marabouparken
At Marabouparken Design Christmas market, you will find the latest in art and design from both well-known and emerging designers. There are musical performances and its Monster Club holds paper workshops where books and book pages can be crafted and turned into beautiful Christmas decorations.
Christmas at Rosendals Trädgårdard
One of our favorite locations in Stockholm, Rosendals trädgård hosts a festive market which offers seasonal food, flowers and wreaths, as well as organic breads and pastries. In their farmshop, you can buy preserves, pickles, jams , crafts and bread baked from gingerbread dough in their wood fired stone oven. There are also planned Christmas concerts and a vegan Christmas cooking class too.
Christmas Market at Skoklosters slott
Traditional Christmas Market at the impressive Skokloster Castle with its courtyard filled with stalls selling crafts, food and seasonal sweets. There are also creative workshop for both children and adults.

Sigtuna Christmas Market
Sigtuna’s Christmas market is an open-air market with Christmas decorations and candy, custom-made handicraft, and traditional Swedish food items. You can also enjoy live Christmas carols and music, experience its Lucia celebration, as well as a visit from Jultomte (Santa Claus). The Christmas market takes place all along the main street and at the Main Square and Little Square.
Christmas Market at Filmstaden
Known as “Sweden’s Hollywood”, Filmstaden (the film city) will hold a Christmas market on its grounds including exhibitors, a Lucia procession, handicrafts and art, film screenings, guided tours of the area, flea markets, and performances.
Christmas Market at Steninge Castle
