Stockholm’s Best Apps

Lola A. Åkerström rounds up some of the most useful apps for visiting and exploring Stockholm.

While there are lots of wonderful apps worth mentioning, we’ll only be focusing on apps that are in English or have English translation options since most travelers to the city aren’t fluent in Swedish.

Taxi Stockholm

Taxi Stockholm

Taxi Stockholm allows you to find taxis within your area and the cost of transportation including allowing you to book a pickup time. You can also check out Uber as an alternative. Other options on Google Play include Taxi 020 and Taxi Kurir.

Stockholm Commute (SL)

Stockholm Commute

The Stockholm Commute app searches all transport types available – bus, metro, train, tram and boat – on Stockholm’s public transport system (Stockholms Lokaltrafik – SL) to make your trip around the city easier. With the app, you can plan a trip between two addresses / stops, search for departure times, get timetables for stops in real time, locate the nearest stop via GPS, subscribe to notifications on traffic status and potential problems as well as get maps for all metro and commuter rails. You can view tickets and balances on your travel card. You can also look into the app Transit Map Stockholm from iTunes for those with iPhones.

Nemo Swedish

Not that you’ll need to learn Swedish to enjoy your time in Stockholm because almost everyone here speaks good English but if you’d like to learn a few phrases to help you integrate a lot better, you can check out this free app which uses a flashcard style. Nemo targets words and phrases most often used in conversation. For beginners, there are curated essential lists like “If You Only Learn 10 Things”, “If You Only Learn 50 Things”, and “If You Only Learn 100 Things” lists. There are also tools for intermediate and advanced learners like more conversational modules and speech studio technology.

Spotted by Locals

Spotted by locals

Spotted by Locals is a city guide app with blog type articles and reviews written by locals in 57 cities. These locals write insider tips that give a broader picture of their cities than one might get through the typical travel app. The app allows you to purchase city guides and access these reviews of various activities from bars and restaurants to arts and culture. “The Spotted by Locals Stockholm guide is ideal for us slow travelers and locals who wish to dig a little deeper into the city,” shares Kendra Valentine, STS contributor.

Download the app from iTunes or Google Play.

Streetkäk

Stockholm Street Food

Streetkäk is an app that makes it easier for locals to locate street food trucks in real time as they move around the city. With the app, you can see where food trucks are serving in real time, see food trucks’ locations and opening hours for coming days, get latest offers from the nearest food trucks, check the menus and pictures, and follow the food trucks on Facebook and Twitter.
